As a semiconductor, research has been done on its potential use as an intrinsic infrared detecting material. It is used in the photoelectromagnetic-Nernst configuration. In this configuration it exhibits spectral and frequency responses indicative of thermal rather than photon behavior. \r\n\r\nApplications as quantum dots: Mercury telluride quantum dots, which have low-loss fiber windows, are used in colloidal nanocrystal for telecommunications. Furthermore, research shows that mercury telluride quantum dots present a new state of matter known as the topological insulator.
