It is used as a fluorinating agent instead of chlorine and bromine, as a catalyst in the production of polyurethanes, in the Finkelstein reaction to convert chlorocarbons to fluorocarbons with polar solvents, in the room temperature oxidation of noble metals in HF, and in the measurement of electronic polarizability of ions in polymers of alkali halides. Current research is being conducted on the use of potassium fluoride in ion-specific swelling and deswelling of ampholytic polymer gels.
