It is an important laboratory reagent and is utilized in LB buffer for gel electrophoresis, and dissolving refractories and compounds with a high concentration of basic oxides, carbonate rocks and aluminosilicates. It can also dissolve inorganic oxides to use for spectrochemical analysis when combined with lithium tetraborate, and can be  employed to modify mineral powder samples using the borax fusion method for analysis by WDXRF (Wavelength Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence) Spectroscopy. However, very acidic samples or samples that are not fully oxidized cannot be dissolved. It is also a general purpose acidic flux and a spectroscopic fluxing agent used for fusing basic oxides, carbonates, alumino-silicates, glass, ceramics, cement steel, aluminum, concrete mixes, soils, magnesites, bauxites and rare earth oxides.
