It can be used in borate fusion sample preparation to allow for analysis using various techniques such as XRF or AAS. It has been used for the analysis of wild rice for silicon, calcium, magnesium, and potassium, and for measuring total elements in soil, geology, plants, and other natural organic compounds. In medicine it is used to support antioxidants in tissue. Other applications include use in cell phones and as a non-linear optical material. Current research is being conducted to improve lithium metaborate fusion techniques in order to improve inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometric analysis of felsic rocks and to allow for the use of fluoride ion-selective electrodes in order to determine the amount of fluorine in silicate materials.
